NBA trade rules are ever evolving. Peculiar situations force NBA executives to go back to the drawing board and figure out the intricacies of NBA trade laws. The current Kevin Durant situation with the Brooklyn Nets has forced commissioner Adam Silver to do just that. This all started with Carmelo Anthony forcing his way out of the Denver Nuggets and going to the New York Knicks.?
Kevin Durant, as widely reported, is unwilling to play in Brooklyn anymore. The Kyrie Irving situation and James Harden’s exit may be contributing factors. Harden got traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in the past season for Ben Simmons and a few draft assets. Kyrie Irving opted into his $37 million player option however has shown no interest in playing for the Nets.

Kevin Durant has shared his list of preferred destinations in the NBA. He wants to play for a team committed to winning now, and the Nets may not be that according to him. A potential list of suitors includes the Phoenix Suns and the Miami Heat.
In the summer of 2019, KD agreed to a four-year deal with the Nets that included $189 million in guaranteed money and an average annual salary of $48 million. The three-time Olympic gold winner signed another four-year, $198 million deal in 2021, keeping him under contract until 2025?2026.
Now with four years on his contract, Durant has refused to suit up for the Brooklyn Nets. This has not been ideal for Adam Silver, who has promised to look into what can be done for player trade demand that early in the contract. The commissioner feels that such trades can potentially ruin the game.

Adam Silver is known to be a change maker in the NBA. He has actively taken part in creating a better environment for the sport and the players. Silver has been party to revolutionary rule changes like the ‘Play-In tournament,’ the ‘Take Foul’, and several contractual changes. He promises to take strong measures to protect the integrity of the game following Durant’s trade request. He addressed the issues in an NBA press conference.?

He is referring to how the media houses are operating, and narratives are being created.?Players such as Paul George, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, and Anthony Davis have all made public trade requests while under contract.?

Silver said, “Whether it be a team or a player not meeting a contractual obligation, that’s something you just don’t want to see as a league.“

Moreover, Silver has confirmed changes are in the works to remedy contractual handlings in the NBA with regard to trade demands. It will be interesting to see if this keeps Kevin Durant in Brooklyn or not.?
