NBA legend LeBron James has finally done it. He is officially the NBA’s All-Time Top Scorer after surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar‘s three-decade-long record against the Oklahoma City Thunder recently. Much has been talked about Abdul-Jabbar and James’ relationship over the years, or the lack of anything of the sort. While some people claim that Kareem holds a grudge against King James for a few previous back and forth exchanges, some claim otherwise. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has addressed the issue himself recently while addressing James’ latest milestone.

In a recent blog on Kareem Substack, the former NBA champion asserted that he is nothing but happy for LeBron. Moreover, he also blamed himself for not having a relationship with James. Additionally, some shots were fired at his former teammate Magic Johnson while addressing the elephant in the room.

NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was in attendance for the game between the Los Angeles Lakers vs Oklahoma City Thunder on the 8th of February, 2023. This was more than just a regular game. Four-time NBA champion LeBron James was just 36 points away from becoming the NBA’s top scorer.

As expected, he did break the record. Following this brilliant milestone, fans have been wondering about Abdul-Jabbar’s thoughts following King James’ feat. Addressing his large fanbase on his Substack blog, Kareem admitted that he is indeed very happy with LeBron’s feat, “It’s as if I won a billion dollars in a lottery and 39 years later someone won two billion dollars. How would I feel?” Moreover, he also touched upon his relationship with James and confirmed that they indeed have no relationship with each other.

Abdul-Jabbar further wrote, “LeBron said we don’t have a relationship. He’s right—and for that I blame myself. Not for anything I did, but perhaps for not making more of an effort to reach out to him. By nature I have never been a chummy, reaching-out kind of guy (as the media was always quick to point out). I’m quiet, shy, and am such a devoted homebody that you’d think I have agoraphobia.”

According to Kareem, their age difference also plays a huge role. By the time LeBron was in the league, Abdul-Jabbar was already retired.

Lakers legend Magic Johnson was once asked to comment on how Abdul-Jabbar would react to James breaking his record. Johnson spent a long time playing alongside Kareem and he knows him well.

However, Magic predicted that it will be a hard pill to swallow for Abdul-Jabbar, which is quite far from the truth, in Kareem’s opinion. The 75-year-old is in no way salty about his record being broken. Rather, he’s happy to pass the torch to the next generation.
