Now the NBA’s beloved Sir Charles often imparts his wisdom to those who listen to him. The NBA legend once revealed how he copes with loss in terms of money as well as relationships.

He has told several stories from his life in the past, all of which can be a learning point for millions. However, Barkley does not like to force his opinions onto people. What he does like, is to make a difference with his experiences and his story about the dark side of fame and wealth, which might help people understand their situations better.

In his book, the 1994 NBA MVP discussed losing friends due to the change in circumstances. After spending all his growing up years with the same set of people, losing them later when he became famous and rich was tough for him. Although Barkley himself didn’t contribute to tarnishing those relationships, his growing stature was becoming a problem for people around him. The NBA veteran talked about this in a book. He said that he has lost over $700k because he couldn’t say no to his friends asking him for financial help. Although this was a noble gesture, he ended up losing the money and those friends over this.

Barkley said. “The friends I’ve loaned money to won’t even speak to me now. It’s the strangest damned thing.” He said that this was mainly due to the changes in circumstances since after he became famous, the circles he used to be part of changed. Afraid of the “you’ve changed” statement slapped on his reputation, Chuck continued to lend money. Despite his efforts, his worst fear came to life as those people started turning their backs on him. “You’re just caught, not really certain what to do,” Barkley said, confused by the sudden change.

Barkley has amassed an impressive $60 million in net worth. Although he is far from hanging the boots in his second career, he surely has come a long way in life. Born in Leeds, Alabama, Barkley didn’t grow up with the best of facilities aiding him. Despite the shortcomings, he reached the top of one of America’s favorite sporting leagues. After being picked by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1984 NBA draft, Barkley never looked back. The 11x NBA All-Star is still deeply connected to his roots and fondly talks about his younger days.
