There has been a ton of support, and awareness raised for detained WNBA star Brittney Griner. But sometimes, the way awareness is raised may cross a line or might provoke a few people. And this Spurs legend might have done that by dragging the Los Angeles Lakers star, LeBron James.

Becky Hammon won the WNBA title last season as the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces. She made history as she became the first head coach to win the WNBA title in her first season. She was also named the coach of the year for her efforts. Hammon was also a former WNBA All-Star and was a very good player.

Also, she was the second female assistant coach in NBA history during her eight-year stint with the San Antonio Spurs. She is also the first-ever female player to ever coach a game. And she is the center of controversy today.

Hammon says if LeBron James was arrested, he would have been free by now

The former all-star was speaking about Brittney Griner and her detainment in Russia. She said, “It’s wrong, It was a gut punch. There’s so many things that are normal over there that I’m like, ‘It’s not normal.’ … She’s been turned into a political pawn and it’s really unfortunate. The international world really needs to pay attention.”

Hammon added, “If this was LeBron James, is LeBron James still sitting over there? I don’t think so. I think there would be an absolute uproar, craziness, pandemonium.”

Hammon also played in the Russian league and she is also a Russian citizen. She and the WNBA have been doing everything in their power to garner attention to Brittney Griner’s case. Even the NBA and its players have been raising their voices and supporting the cause.

Despite all this, there has been little progress in her case. A few months ago, the US State Department released a statement saying that they have offered Russia a prisoner swap deal. But since then, there has been little update and experts say that the release may take a long time.

Nevertheless, the NBA and the WNBA have been very vocal in the support of Griner. But using LeBron James’s or any other player’s name may not be the right direction to go.
