His mother Lucille O?Neal did the best she could to raise a young Shaq along with his siblings without a father figure in the picture. However, when the seven-footer got drafted by the Orlando Magic in 1992, he made sure to let his mother know in the best way he thought he could.

Shaquille O?Neal?s mother Lucille tried to make ends meet in order to feed and raise her children right. And that tendency did not go away when Shaq got his first paycheck from the league. So, when Lucille was looking for a layaway plan for a big purchase, the recently drafted Shaq admitted calling her out on it.

One topic of discussion was Shaq calling out his mother in public after he decided to go on a shopping spree back when he got drafted. Shaq shared the story of being on layaway plans with Monica on the show.

He said, ?We were on layaway for so long that when I got drafted in 1992, I buy them a house first. I?ll get them set up. I said Mom come shopping with me, stereo shopping. So, I?m balling. Amps, double cassette, CD, laser, boom, boom, boom.?

?And I?m looking for my mom and I?m like where mommy at? She in the back, talking to a guy about the layaway program. Yeah, she was. I was like, what are you doing? She was like, yeah baby, we?re going to put this on layaway.?

The Los Angeles Lakers legend went on to add, ?Mom, them days is over. And I spent like 25,000.?

Shaq’s philanthropic actions

Shaquille O?Neal gave her mom a taste of what was to come as soon as he got drafted into the NBA. And he made sure that his mother never had to struggle to make ends meet. The whole story of the interaction with his mother started when he saw another mother and son in a supermarket.

He bought them two laptops when that mother was looking at payment plans, trying to figure out how to afford even a single laptop for her son. Shaq has always got a big heart and is known for his philanthropy every now and then.
