One of the NBA’s most popular couples is Miami Heat great Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union. The stars had been linked together since 2009 and they got married in 2014. But when it came to having kids of their own, they faced major struggles. And when they had a kid through surrogacy in 2018, they faced heavy criticism. The couple opened up on their struggles in an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Union never wanted to have a child, but when she married Wade and became a stepmom for three kids, her perspective changed. But Union had suffered heartbreaking miscarriages in the past and she was diagnosed with a major uterus disease. She went through many rounds of IVF but it was unsuccessful. And when they got good news, it ended in sorrow many times.

And later, they decided to go through surrogacy.

Dwyane Wade was worried about Gabrielle Union’s health

Union and Wade did an interview with Oprah talking about their youngest child. Oprah referenced a quote from Union’s book which talked about her struggles. Union said, “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant ? I?ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”

Dwyane Wade also said, “Let me share something with you, as we go into this process, I’m watching my wife, who I know all these things, and I want this for us and I want this for her, but I’m watching her do things to her body, to herself and its getting to the point where it’s not healthy.”

Wade told his wife that he wants this as much as she wants but she is the most important person to him. And he wasn’t willing to put his wife in so much pain.

The couple welcomed Kaavia James in 2018. But when the couple posted pictures of themselves with their daughter, they faced severe backlash. Many questioned Union for wearing a gown even though they went through surrogacy.

But they passed through all that and are now happy with their family. Union and Wade finally got what they wanted. And Wade was also happy that he didn’t have to put his wife through so much pain anymore.
