Charles Barkley‘s illustrious career in the NBA was preceded by an illustrious career as a premier athlete in the NCAA. The Chuckster transitioned into a whole new dimension as he went to the NBA, earning a substantial amount of money at the sport’s top level. However, Barkley never forgot his roots, as even decades after retiring, he has continued to advocate for pay reforms in college basketball. During a recent sit-down, the NBA legend once again called out the unfair NCAA setup in college basketball, advocating for lesser pay for top athletes.

The Philadelphia 76ers legend has always been vocal about inequality in sports, as he advocates the growth of disadvantaged kids in the country. In an attempt to talk about relatively recent developments in college sports, Barkley shared his unpopular opinion with the public.

Back in July 2021, the NCAA changed its policies, as they allowed the young stars to monetize their Name, Image, Likeness, or NIL. Since then, just like every citizen in the country, the players can freely earn money from their popularity.

However, Charles Barkley has a point to add to these new policies, as he believes it wouldn’t benefit many youngsters in the long run. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, the 11-time All-Star mentioned how he would take care of the National Collegiate Athletic Association if provided an opportunity, starting with putting a cap on NIL deals.

I want them to cap NIL because you can?t pay everybody. I mean, you?re gonna pay the good-looking quarterback, the running back, the wide receiver. You?re not payin? the big, ugly offensive lineman. And they the hardest-working guys on the team, the offensive linemen,” said Barkley. His words surprised the interviewer as the latter enquired if he’d feel the same if he was back at Auburn as a youngster, to which Barkley had a confident reply at the tip of his tongue.

I?m makin? a lotta money[from jersey sales]. And my teammates ain?t makin? a dime. ? I?m pullin? in my nice Range Rover, and I?m getting all this money off jerseys. I got all type of money comin? in. They?re like, ?Charles Barkley made $2 million this year.? You don?t think my teammates gonna be pissed? And that?s what concerns me. That really concerns me.? said Barkley.

The 76ers legend added how he wasn’t really against the revolutionary change, but felt that there was room for improvement as it would be responsible for shaping the lives of young kids. The Chuckster wants checks and balances on the system to preserve the competition in the tournament by empowering smaller colleges. He also believes that top athletes don’t deserve so much money without any prior experience and that there should be incentives for other lesser known players in the team to do well in the games.

Barkley’s vision towards helping young kids hasn’t been something recent. The Chuckster has previously donated large sums of money, to help the youth of the country.
