One of the biggest debates which have been persistent for quite some time is, how would’ve Michael Jordan fared in today’s league. There are various theories and claims which assert that Jordan would’ve dominated the league much like how he did in the 90s. Moreover, there are also theories that state the opposite. Recently, an eminent analyst who coached the New York Knicks chimed in on the debate.

The analyst in question is none other than Jeff Van Gundy. While talking about the change in rules and the overall structure of the game, Van Gundy claimed that Jordan would’ve averaged 40 points a game. Additionally, he also talked about some other aspects of Jordan which would’ve helped him dominate.

Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls dominated the league for an entire decade. During his time in the league, the rules were quite different. While technical fouls are given nowadays for arguing, the 90s were entirely different. That era of basketball was incredibly physical contrary to what the game is currently.

For this reason, Jeff Van Gundy feels Jordan would’ve dominated. Moreover, although the scoring nowadays is focused on 3-point shooting, it would’ve not been a problem for the six-time NBA champion. Therefore, he would be averaging 40 points a game given the modern-day rules and the gameplay.

Van Gundy said following up on his claim, “If you would give the ball to Jordan in his prime with these rules, with all the shooting, and think that he wasn’t going to shoot over 50%? Michael shot over 50% with limited 3-point shooting, and limited space in the triangle offense.”

Interestingly, this comes after another claim made by Van Gundy on Anthony Davis recently. He asserted that the 2020 NBA champion would not be a Hall of Famer if his career ended today.

The two share quite a history. Jordan once dropped a masterclass against the New York Knicks after certain comments by Van Gundy before the game. He bashed Jordan’s retirement antics and referred to him as a ‘con man’!
