Brittney Griner continues to suffer adverse conditions inside one of the most infamous penal colonies in Russia. Recently, the WNBA star’s plight forced an acclaimed author to put forward a withering comparison regarding her present situation. The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been stuck in Russia for over nine months. Renowned psychologist Carl Hart recently argued that Brittney Griner would have been home sooner if she were a male athlete stuck under similar circumstances.

Carl Hart was among the first African American professors to secure a tenure at Columbian University. He specializes in behaviors related to drug intake and has also been advocating for legalizing recreational drugs for adults. Moreover, the renowned professor has authored two books, High Price and Drug Use for Grown-Ups and co-authored recent editions of Drugs, Society, and Human Behavior.?

Further, Hart claimed that if people actually cared about everyone’s equality, neither BG nor anybody else would be detained for the use of drugs. The acclaimed activist used his comparison to point out the disparity in treatment between male and female athletes in the sporting world.

Carl Hart wrote,?“Day 291 of #BrittneyGriner’s lock up. Imagine if Tom Brady, or even LeBron James, were jailed for having a drug. Contrary to the lies we spew about our noble ideals, we don’t value everyone’s humanity equally. If we did, Brittney, nor anyone else, would be detained for drug use.”

Hart used the example of male sports athletes like LeBron and Brady to point out the reality behind the concept of equality in society. He reckoned that if people really cared about equality, Griner would not have been stuck in Russia for so long. Hart’s recent tweet adds to the array of posts he has made on social media advocating the swift release of the WNBA athlete.

As a staunch advocate for legalizing recreational drug use for adults, Hart deems it unacceptable that someone should be in prison for almost a decade for carrying trace amounts of cannabis oil.

Brittney Griner is currently facing the horrors of the infamous Russian penal colonies. The inmates in prison colonies deal with filthy and squalid conditions in crowded bunkers. Griner might be subjected to 16-17 hours of forced labor, working in dirty and dangerous sweatshops infested by rats.

Moreover, the food served to inmates in penal colonies is so stale that even cats do not eat it. As a result, malnutrition and diseases are pretty common in conditions where temperatures can get extremely cold. Additionally, the penal colonies lack proper medical facilities.?
