Fans were in love with Magic Johnson’s radiating personality. The Los Angeles Lakers‘ smile had won over millions. Likewise, after his iconic NBA career came to an end, he had to find a way to connect with the people once again. So in 1998, the five-time champion dove into the world of late night with The Magic Hour. However, the reception wasn’t as expected. Notably, Magic Johnson had to face fire for his inexperience as a host. During a later interview, he revealed his slow development into getting better.
Magic arguably has one of the greatest storylines in NBA history. But no legend is complete without a mighty downfall. For the generational guard, it was what many considered rock bottom. Notably, Johnson was diagnosed with HIV in 1992 which forced him to retire from the NBA temporarily. The times were dark with the three-time MVP even contemplating suicide. However, Magic showed the people miracles can happen.
Their optimistic personality helped him power through and rise as an advocate for the disease. After his final season in the NBA, Magic stayed away from the spotlight. That was until three years later he came up with ‘The Magic Hour’. Success had become synonymous with Johnson due to his NBA career. However, the show had a rough time.

Magic Johnson couldn’t crack into late night
When Johnson’s show came to the air, late-night TV had two well-established kings. Notably, the four-time assists leader had to go up against David Letterman and Jay Leno. After a successful opening episode, the show seemed to be losing its magic. Several media outlets criticized Magic’s incapability as a host. Moreover, Howard Stern even mocked the Magic Hour back when he was a radio host.

However, the hate didn’t stop Johnson from being optimistic. During his interview with Washington Post, he said, “I was uneasy the first night. I was nervous Tuesday, better Wednesday. I felt really good today. I’m getting into the flow. I’m making more suggestions.”
The host even said he doesn’t bother about the critics. Magic Johnson only knew he was going to take his shot at late-night TV. Unfortunately, the show’s demise never stopped. It aired for just one season before being canceled. Speaking about the show, Magic feels it didn’t do well due to various celebrities refusing to attend as guests.
