There has been a long list of NBA veterans and Hall of Famers who have transitioned from being players to head coaches. Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Elgin Baylor, Isiah Thomas, and Steve Kerr are a few names on that list. While they have had prolific careers on the court, a few of them have not had great coaching legacies. Undoubtedly, Isiah Thomas would be one of them. One of the greatest point guards to grace the court is still remembered as a bad coach. In a recent public forum, Thomas revealed a personal roadblock he was going through at the time when he was coaching.

NBA legend Isiah Thomas was not in a good headspace

In the latest episode of ‘The Pivot Podcast‘, Isiah Thomas revealed, “I was mentally messed up…my mom was dying“. He further?admitted that his tenure as coach of the New York Knicks was a “bad run“. He has, however, visibly been proud of players under his tutelage who went on to clinch championship titles on other teams.

My second year of coaching, I shouldn’t have been coaching“, said Isiah.

He attributed his poor mental health to his mother’s passing. Mary Thomas died in 2010 after battling heart problems for several years. It was reported that she underwent surgery the same day as Isiah made his third act as coach at Florida International University.

What was the infamous Knicks debacle?

Under Isiah Thomas, the New York Knicks struggled to win. In his two seasons as head coach, he only had a 56-108 record. The then-president of the franchise, Donnie Walsh eventually fired Isiah as head coach. However, Walsh confirmed that Isiah would remain with the team but not in a coaching capacity.

The 12x NBA All-Star also had his share of controversies and took on poor roster decisions during his time as head coach. With the lack of a good coach, the New York Knicks had to face the music.
