Lucille O’Neal, mother of retired NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, made some startling revelations during a speech at the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy Odyssey luncheon on Wednesday. Held at the Chattanooga Convention Center, the event featured an a riveting speech from Lucille O’Neal, among other things. During the event, the four-time NBA champion’s mother opened up about spending her son’s money on alcohol and being stuck at the same place before Shaq made an offer to bail her out.

She candidly opened up about her struggles with addiction and how it consumed her when her son first joined the NBA in 1992. At that time, she was using her son’s money on her alcohol addiction, even drinking liquor she couldn’t pronounce. She realised that she needed to make a change.

Lucille O’Neal’s journey: from addiction to higher education

An article in Times Free Press described how Lucille’s faith in God gave her the strength to turn her life around. She heard a voice in her mind saying, “Walk like you have somewhere to go.” This inspired her to start dreaming about continuing her education, something she never thought was possible. She then shared a story about Shaquille O’Neal. She described that Shaq said, “If you go to college and you keep your grades up, I promise I’ll pay your tuition.” Lucille then opted for a course to study further. She completed her studies in business administration in 2003.

Lucille O’Neal’s passion for education was unrelenting. After earning her undergraduate degree from Bethune-Cookman University, she continued her studies alongside her son and daughter. In 2005, she got her masters degree done in Arts in Organizational Management, fulfilling her dream of higher education.
