LeBron James and Kyrie Irving have a legitimate claim to be hailed as one of the best duos in NBA history. They won the iconic 2016 NBA Championship for the Cleveland Cavaliers, beating all odds against them. However, things changed pretty quickly in Cleveland after the two stars left the burgeoning franchise. Recently, an NBA champion revealed how a harsh decision by the Cavs management served as a blessing in disguise for him.
Los Angeles Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue admitted during a recent podcast appearance that the departure of Kyrie and Bron had really crippled the Cavs. However, the real bombshell was yet to be dropped on him by the franchise’s GM Kobe Altman.

There are few NBA legends who have an NBA Championship on their resume. Meanwhile, Ty Lue is on that rare list, where he has won championships as a player and as a coach as well. Lue won two NBA Championship titles as a player, in 2000 and 2001. As a coach, he won the championship in 2016 with the Cavaliers.
This was during the same time James and Irving spearheaded the Cavaliers’ offense. Lue was recently on The Pivot Podcast where he talked about James, Irving, and his last days with the Cavs.
Lue recalled his conversation with Cavs GM, Koby Altman, when he was let go from the team after Bron and Kyrie’s departure. The veteran coach said that he was told that the team is going to go through a rebuild, and he acknowledged that the management showed him enough respect in delivering this news.
They also made sure that he understood the circumstances and promised the final decision to still be his. “When I was let go…I probably needed it,” the coach said, before quoting Phil Jackson’s advice to take intermittent breaks amid coaching gigs to properly introspect one’s mindset. Lue also admitted that he wanted to be somewhere where the team had a shot at the title, which is why he decided to leave Cleveland.
The former Cavs boss also talked about the sudden shock of King James and Irving leaving. “Things do change”, he said while talking about the two players. He added that their decision was understandable as everyone has a family and their own needs to cater to.

Lue added that the team was built around them and their departure caused complications in the team setup. “…Now when you leave, we had a team full of shooters that couldn’t dribble“, he explained, about having to adjust to the massive change of two stars leaving your team.
