It has been more than six months since WNBA star Brittney Griner was detained in Russia. A few weeks back, she was allowed to talk to the media for the first time. Griner used this opportunity to send a heartwarming message to her wife Cherelle Griner. Brittney and Cherelle married in 2019, after which Cherelle took Griner’s last name. Before this, Griner was previously married to WNBA star Glory Johnson. However, the relationship didn’t last long and was rocky from the beginning.

Interestingly, Johnson had only been dating men before Griner. They fell in love with each other and were engaged in 2014. But things went south in 2015 as the couple was arrested for assault and disorderly conduct because of a fight between them. And they sustained minor injuries as well.

Johnson also explained what caused the fight that day. She said that the two had an argument, and it exploded. Then she said that Griner put her whole palm on her face. So she knocked Griner’s hand off and moved her to the side. Then the Phoenix Mercury star stormed off. However, it was not over. Johnson said that when they passed each other, Griner grabbed the back of her neck and threw her head down.

Later they were arrested and put in the same cell. However, this helped them have a deep discussion where both admitted that they went overboard. While Griner pleaded guilty, Johnson did not. However, the WNBA suspended both of them for seven games.

Surprisingly, the couple went ahead with their wedding and married in May 2015. This was just one month after their arrest for domestic violence. And after another month they announced that Johnson is pregnant. But Griner appealed for an annulment the very next day. The appeal was denied, and they were subsequently divorced in June 2016.
