NBA legend Dennis Rodman was one of the most popular athletes during his prime. He did not care about others’ opinions about him and did whatever he wanted to do. His attitude and his antics off the court earned him a lot of fans around the world. Rodman is an enigma and very few understood his actions. The Worm?did not even play high school basketball. However, an unbelievable growth spurt helped him go from 5’11” to 6’7″ and helped him land college scholarships.

Rodman played college basketball for Southeastern Oklahoma state for three years. He then declared for the 1986 NBA draft. There was not much hype about him, however, the Detroit Pistons believed in his potential. The Pistons selected him as the 27th overall pick in the second round of the draft.

Rodman is a late bloomer, and that is the case with his professional career as well. He initially struggled to adapt to life in the NBA. However, under the tutelage of legendary head coach Chuck Daly, he soon became one of the best defensive players in the league. He relished the challenge of guarding the best player on the opposing team.

Dennis Rodman just wanted to feel normal

Dennis Rodman is one of the most versatile defenders ever. He could guard every position on the basketball court. This helped the Pistons immensely, and they won two straight championships in 1989 and 1990. Rodman won the Defensive Player of the Year award for two straight seasons in 1990 and 1991. However, the Chicago Bulls finally beat the Pistons in the 1991 playoffs and went on to win the title. Then the Pistons started to make some changes to the squad and parted ways with Chuck Daly in 1992.

The changes did not sit well with Rodman and became “rebellious”. In 1993, the Pistons did not see Rodman for months. He was in Las Vegas and lost close to $35,000 in a matter of days. However, he does not have any regrets.

“I hate money,” he said?later. “I went to Las Vegas to lose. So I could feel normal.”

It was almost an act of ‘penance’ by the NBA star. It seemed like Rodman wanted to sacrifice his money to feel like a normal human being again, after being desensitized by media exposure for so long.
