The NBA’s beloved Charles Barkley has told numerous stories over the years. The 60-year-old has lived a fulfilling and exciting life which makes his stories even more interesting. Recently during a podcast appearance, Chuck admitted that in 1993 he failed to recognize one of the biggest celebrities at the time.

Sir Charles, in his debut appearance on the SNL show, could not recognize the musical guest of the evening. The musical guest on the show in 1993 was one of the biggest names in the music industry at the time. Although he did not recognize the talented musicians, Chuck said that “they were really nice.”

Charles Barkley once failed to recognize an American music sensation

The 11x NBA All-Star was picked by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1984 NBA draft. As he slowly built his image as a bonafide star in the league, different opportunities started coming his way. In the year 1993, Barkley was voted the MVP of the league. The same year on September 25th, Chuck hosted the premiere of season 19 of SNL.

The musical hosts for the evening were Nirvana, the legendary band who were at the peak of success at the time. Despite their popularity in popular culture, the NBA star could not recognize them.

The Round Mound of Rebound was recently on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast where he shared his decades-old SNL experience. Chuck was asked if he partied with the rock band since he hosted the night they performed. He replied, “I had no f*****g idea who they were. First of all, they were really nice and awesome.”

Chuck said that the dressing rooms in the SNL building are way too small. The NBA legend added that even though he did not party with the rockstars, he said that he got a “contact high,” every time the Nirvana opened their dressing room door!

Chuck has made a total of four appearances on the highly celebrated show.

Charles Barkley confessed that rock music is not his thing

Despite being in the presence of one of the highest-selling and most popular musicians, Chuck was clueless about them. Later at the show when his friends told him that they are the most popular music group in the world, Barkley confessed his true feelings about their music. He said to his friends “I don’t know them, that is not my type of music.”

However, Chuck recalled meeting the band’s frontman Kurt Cobain, he said that he really liked them for who they were. As for his taste in music, Sir Charles prefers the likes of Luther Vandross.
