“I Got My Grandpa Name Now”: Grandfather Charles Barkley Stole Adorable Nickname After Enlightening Incident Involving a Little Girl

In the course of his basketball career, Charles Barkley has earned several titles and nicknames. From being known as an ‘Auburn Tiger’ to becoming an NBA superstar. As he moved through his career, fans called him numerous nicknames, including ‘Sir Charles’ and ‘The Round Mound of Rebound’. 

This year, though, Barkley got a title that is perhaps the closest to his heart: grandfather. With this title, he was dubbed ‘big Pop’. Earlier this year, daughter Christiana Barkley gave birth to Henry, an adorable baby boy. A look of joy could be seen on Barkley’s face as he spoke about welcoming his first grandchild to the family.

He recently shared an adorable story about his grandchild during an interview with Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks. During the interview, he discussed many things, from his goal to give $1 million to charity each year, to celebrating Sue Bird and Sylvia Fowles in his Hall of Fame speech. Additionally, he talked about retirement and shared the best advice he has ever received. 

It was a little girl who inspired Charles Barkley

While speaking, he shared the story about becoming ‘big Pop’ and how he got the name. Barkley talked about how he stole this adorable nickname after an enlightening incident involving a little girl.

“I was at an award show, Ernie got an award and I went to support him and this little girl comes up and said, ‘Mr. Barkley can I take a picture with you’, I said, ‘Sure’. I said, ‘Who’s going to take the picture?’ and she says, ‘My big Pop,'” Barkley explained.  

Furthermore, he shared how this name inspired him to be called ‘big Pop’ by his own grandchild. In this way, he shared, “I got my Grandpa name now.” As the conversation continued, Barkley described how his perfect day would look like with his grandson by his side.

As part of the interview, Barkley discussed how he spends his days with his grandson. He said the two things he enjoys most are holding his grandchild and watching a football game together.
