The basketball world heard the news they have arguably been wanting for the longest time. Notably, President Joe Biden and the US administration were able to work out the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner from prison in Russia. The eight-time All-Star spent her last 10 months detained away from home. That was until today when the President announced Griner’s return from the White House. However, the prisoner swap only saw Griner come home. Former US marine Paul Whelan remains in the dark. Likewise, hearing the news of Griner’s release, he was upset with the administration for not working out a plan for him.
The 52-year-old’s detention story began back in 2018. He was arrested on alleged espionage charges. However, despite continuously denying the allegations, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison. The Russian Federation continues to view his case differently, as reported by CNN. Moreover, even Whelan is aware of the differential treatment in his case. Furthermore, this isn’t the first time Whelan has ended up staying behind. During the release of fellow American Trevor Reed, Whelan and his family had to suffer the same fate.

However, when Brittney Griner’s name echoed in the news, Whelan’s hope was alive once again. For the longest time, his name was a part of the potential prisoner swap deal for a Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout. But as the news unraveled, it seems once again Whelan’s liberty couldn’t be made possible.
