WNBA star Brittney Griner was a phenomenon ever since her days at Baylor University. However, she did not have the best of relationships with the coaching staff, especially coach Kim Mulkey.

Griner has talked extensively in her book about how Mulkey treated her differently due to her sexual preferences. Moreover, the college wasn’t supportive of Griner as well. Despite being one of their best players, she struggled with college policies.

Interestingly enough, despite the various differences with her coach, Brittney Griner had defended her in her book. However, the WNBA star also called out Kim Mulkey for being hypocritical.

Brittney Griner revealed her coach worried too much about what other people would think

Brittney Griner‘s differences with the college staff and the coach troubled her a lot. She talked about how the coach would show two different faces. According to her, Kim Mulkey would call her into her office in order to ridicule the young basketball star. On the other hand, she would also try to shift the burden from herself by implying that she was just a messenger.

In her 2014 memoir (In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court), Griner wrote, “I don’t think Kim is homophobic, but I do think she was hypocritical when it came to me. She worried too much about what other people might think, and not enough about what I myself actually did think.”

In addition, Mulkey also was very curious about Griner’s love life and she would regularly have heart-to-heart conversations about ‘girl problems’. The first time coach Mulkey addressed BG’s problems about her love life, she sounded as if she was speaking a ‘foreign language’, according to the WNBA star.

Griner, one of the brightest prospects to come out of Baylor University, was destined to make it big in the WNBA. She left Baylor University as one of the hottest prospects in the country, and unsurprisingly, she was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury as the #1 overall pick during the 2013 draft. 

In the nine seasons with the franchise, Griner made it to the All-Star game seven times. She averages 17.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists spanning her WNBA career with the Mercury.
