The Bulls-Pistons rivalry was one of the most important rivalries of the NBA. It started in the mid-70s and heated up in the mid-80s. Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Isiah Thomas, and Scottie Pippen were all part of this legendary rivalry with Rodman playing for both sides. Rodman was one of the fiercest players of the Pistons who had a beef with Pippen after pushing him during Game 4 of the 1991 Eastern Conference finals. However, Rodman, once the mortal enemy of Pippen, revealed how he thinks Pippen was underrated and even better than the great Larry Bird.

Dennis Rodman, in an interview in 2020, opened up about how he didn’t want to apologize after his incident with Scottie Pippen. The Pistons who were losing against the Bulls in the fourth quarter of the Eastern Conference finals of 1991 knew they could not recover from the loss. Amid this, Rodman pushed Pippen towards the stanchion, which required six stitches for Pip.

Rodman clarified, he didn’t want to hurt Pippen, but the push came out of frustration. He further stated how the PR director of the Detroit Pistons, Matt Dobek, made him sign an apology letter in respect of the incident. The Worm eventually signed the letter after being reluctant at first. However, Rodman admitted in 2020, ” I didn’t write that thing, and I didn’t want to sign it.”

Amidst saying how he didn’t want to sign the letter, Dennis Rodman also stated Scottie Pippen was a better forward than NBA legend Larry Bird. He stated how Pippen used his speed to avoid the defenders in the game. The Worm got impressed with the in-and-out movement of the Bulls forward, despite being slightly skinny.

Further, in the comparison with Bird, he described Bird as great, but not agile and capable of playing in multiple positions. The Worm said people used to call Larry Bird the quintessential forward but never realized how great Pippen was in 1991.

According to Rodman, Pippen revolutionized the point-forward position. He finished off by saying, “If LeBron was playing during the ’90s, I’d still say Scottie Pippen was the second-best player behind Michael.”

The words of Rodman definitely indicated how Pippen was an important part of the Chicago Bulls team. They then formed a great partnership when Rodman joined the Bulls and won three straight titles.
