NBA legend Dennis Rodman was one of the most instrumental players behind the success of the Detroit Pistons in the late 80s. With his top-notch rebounding skills, the five-time NBA champion fascinated everyone in Detroit for seven long years and even won two NBA championships for the city. Therefore to commemorate his brilliance on the court, the Pistons decided to honor the legendary rebounder in a grand tribute just before his Hall-of-Fame induction in 2011. However, Rodman addressed the event in an interview once and revealed that he personally believed he didn’t deserve the honor.

The Detroit Pistons retired Rodman’s No. 10 jersey for his contributions for the Eastern conference team. Rodman has always been pretty straightforward about his opinions throughout his career. The four-time NBA champion didn’t make an exception this time and revealed his true thoughts on the incident.
Dennis Rodman once revealed his thoughts on his jersey retirement
In a 2011 one-on-one interview with Graham Bensinger, Dennis Rodman unveiled how he felt about the Pistons retiring his jersey. During the interview, Bensinger asked the Worm how did he feel after receiving the tribute. The two-time DPOY didn’t even take a second and responded instantaneously with a shocking answer. He said, “I didn’t deserve that.”
However, after saying that he clarified the reasons behind his statement. Rodman added, “I didn’t deserve it because I wasn’t that long enough to get my number retired.”

The Worm believed he didn’t deserve the honor because he spent only seven years in the franchise. He added that it would have been different if he was a major part of the organization. But Rodman claimed that he was just a piece in a huge puzzle. However, he concluded his answer by saying that he felt great that people still loved and appreciated his work.
Rodman spend a total of seven seasons in the Pistons after which he moved to the San Antonio Spurs. In that seven seasons, he was able to bag two championships. Apart from that, The Worm also earned two Defensive Player of the Year awards. The five-time NBA champion finished his stint at Detroit averaging 8.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.
