Former Miami Heat superstar Dwyane Wade and Hollywood actor Gabrielle Union have stood by each other through thick and thin for about 14 years. The journey to reach where they are now has not been just sunshine and roses. In a 2020 documentary, Wade talked about the rough patch that he and Union briefly went through back in 2013. Furthermore, he also shared details of the aftermath of certain actions that affected his relationship with Union.

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union did not have the ‘love at first sight’ type of love story. On the contrary, they had to take their time to get to know each other. The couple eventually began dating two years after they first met, making their relationship public in 2010. The couple went their separate ways for few months in 2013 due to their hectic work schedules. They got back together by the end of the same year when Wade popped the question to Union. Union and Wade finally got hitched in 2014 and are currently raising four kids together.

In the documentary, ‘D Wade: Life Unexpected’, the 3x NBA champion talked about the time he found out about the child he had fathered during his brief split with Gabrielle Union. When the couple decided to part ways in 2013, Wade got into a relationship with Aja Metoyer and conceived his third child. Keeping the information to himself took its toll on Wade and it began affecting his mental and physical health. In the documentary, Wade shared that confessing his actions to Union was the hardest thing he had ever done.

“I had a child with someone else and I had to tell her. Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is man up and tell Gabrielle Union that I’ve had a child with somebody else. I couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t eating,” Wade said in the ESPN documentary, as per ET.

The couple is now going stronger than ever as they unite to extend their support to Wade’s daughter Zaya in the midst of an ongoing legal battle regarding her legal name and gender change petition to the court.

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union had to struggle once again when the couple decided to try for a baby. After facing disappointment due to several miscarriages, the NBA power couple decided to go for surrogacy. In 2018, Wade and Union became parents to their first daughter together, Kaavia James. Experiencing fatherhood for the fourth time was the ultimate push for Wade needed to exit from the league.

“That was my push away from the game. It was time. There just came a point when I had to look in the mirror and say, ‘What more do you want out of this?” Wade once said.
