Michael Jordan calls Janet Jackson to establish his popularity

The first time Michael Jordan faced rejection was when he was in high school. It might be hard to believe but His Airness could not make the varsity team due to his height. After Jordan went off to college, his skills improved and so did his confidence. Additionally, Jordan’s competitive nature also grew more and more. Basketball coach Roy Williams said that Jordan did not speak to him for 24 hours after he defeated MJ in a game of pool. Furthermore, Mitch Albom recalled the time MJ was on a bus with his teammates. Apparently, the players were comparing their popularity among themselves. One of them said that MJ was not popular enough to be able to get in touch with $180 million worth Janet Jackson.

“Finally somebody said something like, ‘ I bet even Michael can’t get a hold of Janet Jackson’. He took out a cell phone, dial up, said ‘Is Janet there? Just tell her it’s MJ’. Two seconds later, Janet Jackson was on the phone,” said Albom.
