Irrespective of whether someone is a basketball fan or not, Brittney Griner is a name that is familiar to millions around the world at this point in time. After her arrest earlier this year, Griner made headlines all around the sports world and beyond.
Griner has quite a history of being a controversial figure. A few years ago, she gave her opinions regarding the National Anthem and how she will be boycotting it before matches. Needless to say, she was bashed mercilessly for her views.

When confronted regarding her words, she talked about how she did not mean it the way people perceived her statements. Moreover, she also talked about her family and their history of serving the country.?
Griner’s father, Raymond Griner, is a former police officer who served the United States of America in Vietnam. Talking about growing up, Griner revealed that her father’s stories always intrigued her.
Griner said, “I liked to hear stories about his day, and I also liked to hear his stories about when he served in Vietnam. Sometimes he?d get out his scrapbook and show me pictures of himself overseas.“
She further added that her father’s acts of service inspired her to represent her country in a similar capacity.?Interestingly enough, Griner has served her country in her own unique way. Brittney was an integral part of the United States National Team and she has two Olympic gold medals to her name.
Brittney Griner married without the presence of her father
Although Brittney’s father is supportive of his daughter currently, it has not been like this always. She was once married to former WNBA star Gloria Johnson. However, their marriage ended abruptly amidst legalities and other issues.
To add to their problems, the families of the couple were strongly against their marriage. In fact, Griner’s father, Ray, refused to be present during Brittney’s big day.

Despite all the pomp during their wedding, Brittney’s and Gloria’s marriage was very short-lived. After their divorce, Griner married her current wife Cherelle in 2019.
