Hollywood lost a pioneer, a revolutionary, but most importantly, a man of great virtue. Harry Belafonte, the legendary actor and singer, sadly passed away at the age of 96. He first rose to fame for his melodic tunes and acting. At one time, Belafonte was one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, credited with popularizing ‘calypso’. However, his most important works came as an activist, as he marched at the forefront of the Civil Rights struggle for half a century. Thousands mourned the news of Belafonte’s passing, including NBA legend Magic Johnson.

The 96-year-old achieved global success as a performer and an actor. However, his primary focus never was to be a megastar in the entertainment industry. Belafonte played a huge role in African American history. From the 1950s, his attention shifted to civil rights. He joined the race for racial equality, standing strong beside his good friend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Lakers legend Magic Johnson spoke about a few of Belafonte’s deeds as a social activist. Johnson brought up the time the entertainment icon paid the bail for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and also his immense efforts towards attaining racial equality. He even mentioned how Belafonte was the highest-paid black performer in history at one point.

“Today we lost a titan in the entertainment industry, the legendary Harry Belafonte. A singer, actor, activist, philanthropist, great person and so much more,” said Johnson. He finished his long message by stating, “May you rest in peace. Cookie and I are praying for all of the Belafonte family and loved ones.”
