LeBron James’ name is almost synonymous with the sport of basketball. A generational talent, the all-time top-scorer, and a 4x NBA champion, the legacy of James is all set in stone. There is, however, just one award that eludes him. One, that he hasn’t come close to achieving. That is, of course, the Slam Dunk Trophy. While an award that has lost traction over the years, the Slam Dunk Award was one of the most sought-after prizes in the sport. From Julius Erving to Dominique Wilkins. From Michael Jordan to Kobe Bryant, the award has a very rich history.

It begs a very simple question. Why? Why has LeBron shied away from the competition, to the point where analysts like Stephen A. Smith blame James for ruining the All-Star weekend as a whole?

LeBron James gives another reason for skipping the Dunk Contest

LeBron’s excuses have gone on for a while now. First, it was spending time with family. Then, it became wanting to get a break in the middle of the season. And now, Bron came out with another reason for missing the Dunk contest. A Hall of Fame career, multiple championships, and MVPs, and yet, this is the one missing piece from the puzzle. If you were to ask LeBron, however, the dunk contest was never even in the picture.

When asked about his reasoning, James said, “I don?t think it was something I wanted to accomplish in my career…The NBA Dunk Contest was NEVER a goal of mine so, it wasn?t something that I had too much passion for.? While James mentions how championships, All-Star games, and MVPs motivated him, it is safe to say, he has accomplished everything he wanted to. Fans, however, weren’t buying that. As has become a legendary meme at this point, they accused King James of lying again.

The trend first started when James allegedly claimed that he predicted Kobe’s 81-point game. The meme got so famous that LeBron even acknowledged it on his show, The Shop, and also in his season-ending press conference.

Fans having a tough time swallowing the pill

One fan pointed to James’ hilarious gaff during the Conference Finals this year where he missed a wide-open dunk.

Another fan straight-up put up a poll debating the validity of LeBron’s comments.

Some fans, however, came with proof.

One fan echoed Stephen A’s words and accused LeBron of ruining All-Star weekend.

One fan was quick to point out LeBron’s history of lying and said that the real reason was that he was scared of losing.

Regardless of the reasons, seeing LeBron James in the dunk contest has been the dream of many a fan, perhaps next year?
