Michael Jordan has shared a somewhat complicated relationship with his former best friend and NBA legend Charles Barkley. The bond between Jordan and Barkley came into existence just before their fierce rivalry during the 1993 Finals where the Chicago Bulls defeated the Phoenix Suns. After going head to head against one another, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley bonded on their love for golf and ended up becoming the best of buddies. However, a massive difference of opinion followed by a comment from Barkley led to the end of their friendship. However, back when the two NBA legends were friends, Michael Jordan tore apart Charles Barkley for his poor golf skills during an appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s show in 2005.
The beef between MJ and Barkley came into existence after Barkley made some critical comments about the Bulls legend’s management of the Charlotte Hornets. The 11-time All-Star had reckoned that MJ would not succeed as an owner if he did not get the right people around him. After Barkley’s comment, MJ ended his friendship with the Suns legend. The former best friends have not talked to each other for more than a decade and their beef still seems to exist.

As seen in this clip of a 2005 Oprah Winfrey Interview posted on Twitter, Michael Jordan could not control his laughter after Charles Barkley made a surprise appearance on the show as a model. Later on, Oprah Winfrey asked Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley who among them was the wisest. In response to the question, Jordan laughed sarcastically at Barkley and said, “I know when to eat, when not to eat.” The comment from Jordan left the crowd and the renowned host in splits.
“I mean he’s sick. He’s got a sickness…”

Moreover, Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan talked about their love for golf on the show. The host Oprah Winfrey asked the duo if they still played golf together. Surprisingly, Barkley and MJ admitted unanimously that they did not play together anymore, prompting the audience to laugh once again. Further, Barkley revealed that the six-time NBA champ refused to play with him because he was quite bad at golf.
Meanwhile, Michael Jordan explained why he doesn’t like to play with his friend. His Airness stated, “Well he’s sick. He?s got a sickness. I guess he went to a guy ? he used to be really good. People don?t realize when they see him on TV that he used to shoot 75, 76, 77. And he went to this instructor; this instructor says, ?Make it seem like you?re stopping up top so you can get your tempo.? He hasn?t started since.?
The 15-time All-Star further claimed that instead of improving after getting lessons from an instructor, Barkley’s golfing skills got worse. MJ added that Charles Barkley took the instructor’s advice too seriously, resulting in his downfall on the golf course. Moreover, Jordan shared that Barkley’s swing was extremely bad and urged Oprah not to play it on TV.
In order to save himself from an attacking MJ, Barkley reckoned that his swings were ruined after he started getting yips. He revealed that it was the reason why Michael Jordan stopped playing golf with him. Unfortunately, a few years down the line, their friendship was ruined after Barkley questioned MJ’s leadership as a team owner.
