Just three years ago, the 23-year-old scarily collapsed on the basketball floor. Ample opportunities came by for him to walk away. Yet he didn’t give up.

Now, after wading through the improbable path, he made his dreams come true. The Oklahoma City Thunder gave him his golden ticket.

Keyontae Johnson was once a favorite to win SEC Player of the Year. As a part of Gainesville, he cemented himself as one of the best college talents. Everything was going swimmingly, with Johnson’s game shining in the eyes of scouts. However, in December 2020, something horrific took place. While playing against Florida State, he collapsed on the court. He would be in a coma for three days before waking up. He was diagnosed with ‘Athlete’s Heart’, a disease that affects thousands in America.

His prolific story, one destined for glory had its doors shut. Johnson played just a game after his accident. The atmosphere was moving, with the crowd rallying behind him. At this point, there was less than a glimmer of hope. But Johnson wasn’t ready to submit to his unfortunate fate. “I never really considered stopping. Just the love of the game of basketball, it got me to where I’m at today,” he told the New York times.

He also posted an emotional message following his recovery. He thanked the doctors and medical staff that assisted in his healing. Once back on his feet, he resumed his dreams.

He transferred to Kansas State to rejuvenate his basketball career. His game proved – the fire was burning bright in his heart. He played an integral role in taking the Wildcats to the Elite Eight. The slashing bruiser averaged 18 points per game earning third-team All-American honors. After impressing the basketball world with his marvel story, he was at the stage to declare for the NBA draft.

All that was left was for a team to pick him in the draft. There was no trace of hope for the first 49 names. But finally, he got his moment. The OKC Thunder chose the Kansas City star with the 50th pick in the draft.
