NBA legend Shaquille O?Neal is one of the richest former players ever. Even though Big Diesel earned major sums of money from his NBA salary, he was not complacent. The four-time NBA champion was well aware that an athlete’s career is very short and made sure he tapped into other streams of income. Like most superstars, O’Neal earned a lot from his endorsement deals. However, he still did not settle and stepped into the world of entrepreneurship. Recently, a former Houston Rockets legend revealed how Shaq inspired him with his strategy and skill set as an entrepreneur.
O?Neal now has an estimated net worth of around $400 million and has built a business empire. The Los Angeles Lakers legend reportedly received around $292 million in salary playing basketball.

Shaquille O?Neal reportedly earned over $200 million from endorsements. However, he did not stop there. While most stars settled for endorsement deals, O’Neal opted for partnerships which brought him major success. Furthermore, the 2000 NBA MVP has also made some smart investments over the years. Notably, he has invested in top companies like PepsiCo, Apple, General Electric, and Google. Interestingly, he also owns the royalties of legends like Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, and Elvis Presley.
Apparently, the entrepreneur in O’Neal has inspired his colleague Kenny Smith. The Rockets legend recently made an appearance on the BigBoyTV podcast where he discussed a variety of interesting topics. During the sit-down, the Jet also talked about his new book which was released last month. In the book, Talk of Champions: Stories of the People Who Made Me: A Memoir, Smith talks about every important lesson he has learned from everyone in his life and career including O’Neal.
During the show, the two-time NBA champion revealed that Shaq inspired him with his entrepreneurship. Smith stated, “He [O’Neal] said, ‘Everything is a partnership with me. I don’t endorse the brand. I’m part of it.’ So now, most people don’t even know Shaq owns Forever 21. He owns Brooks Brothers, he owns the rights of Marilyn Monroe. He is the most astute businessman that I know. But he gives you that, ‘Push me in the Christmas tree! I’m a big guy! I’m a big goofy!’ And he’s taking them to the bank every day.”
Smith could not believe that his colleague actually owns the right to Marilyn Monroe.
O?Neal’s $135 million investment
Shaquille O’Neal reportedly made an investment of $135 million to become the second-highest shareholder of the Authentic Brands Group in 2015. The firm notably owns JCPenney and Forever 21. Furthermore, the group also owns the royalties of late legends like Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, and Elvis Presley. So Shaq owns a percentage of these legends? royalties since he is the second-highest shareholder.
