When Brittney Griner was detained in Russia in February, it shook her family. The last ten months were a very hard time for her parents and her spouse as they eagerly waited for her freedom. During her captivity, her family did not get a lot of opportunities to communicate with her. So when she was finally released on December 8, they were elated and were keen to see her. While Griner’s wife Cherelle gave multiple interviews throughout the ordeal, her parents did not make any statements. However, after the WNBA star’s release, her father, Raymond Griner gave an interview where he talked about a variety of things about his daughter’s captivity and release, and had a strong message for her.

Raymond spent two years in Vietnam during the war. The veteran then came back to the country and worked at a Texas sheriff?s office.
