While WNBA star Brittney Griner is finally back home, the 10 months she spent in Russia was nothing short of a painful experience. The Phoenix Mercury star has endured quite a lot since her detainment in February 2022. However, her wife Cherelle Griner has had to go through her fair share of pain while waiting for Griner’s release. Looking back at those moments, Cherelle opened up about getting to attend her first-ever Met Gala event together with her wife.

It has been about four months since Griner returned home and she recently appeared for her first press conference since then. Just months after stirring a massive controversy following her arrest, Griner turned several heads with her comments on an ongoing political debate.

Cherelle Griner recalls her emotionally-charged past

From entertainment to the sports industry, hundreds of stars from different fields descended on May 1 for the annual fundraiser event Met Gala. Among them were Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle who appeared dressed head-to-toe in Calvin Klein. Shortly after arriving at the venue, Griner and Cherelle met up with Lala Anthony for a quick chat.

When asked about their thoughts on making the big debut, the 2014 WNBA champion said, “It means everything. Just to be here with my wife and just be able to be here. It means so much, get to see this event a lot and actually live it, it’s amazing.”

When wife Cherelle was asked the same question, she emotionally recalled her dreadful days without her wife and said, “I mean, it’s surreal still. This time last year, I was missing my wife. So,?to have her right here, to be in this moment, breathtaking.”

Griner bore a cream turtleneck shirt and trousers. She completed her look with a long suit jacket of the same color, pairing the outfit with black shoes. Griner’s wife Cherelle looked stunning in a strapless white gown, black pointed heels and minimalistic jewelry.

Brittney Griner reveals her future plans

During a recent press conference, the Mercury star center shared that she will not be playing in overseas games unless it’s for the Olympics. Prior to her arrest, Griner had been flying to Russia every year since 2014 to play in their league during the offseason. She said that one of the reasons WNBA players are prompted to play overseas was due to the huge pay gap.

Griner stated that for the sake of women’s basketball players, she hopes the league will continue to grow and have better exposure.
