Recently Cherelle Griner, wife of Brittney Griner, spoke about Brittney’s situation, following her recent appeal getting denied by a Russian court. The rejection means that she may have to now serve out her nine-year sentence in Russia. But a few words said by Brittney to her wife over the phone made her more terrified than anything else.

The WNBA champion also has two Olympic gold medals to her name. She used to spend the WNBA off-season in Russia while playing for UMMC Ekaterinburg. She?earned around $1.5 million just from playing in Russia, and this increased pay structure is what attracts several WNBA to ply their trade abroad.
Cherelle shares her thoughts on the denied appeal of wife Brittney
Cherelle Griner spoke about this matter on ‘The View’?recently and expressed her concerns regarding the matter of her wife’s detainment. She went on to reveal that she had the opportunity of speaking with Brittney only three times in the past eight months since her detainment. Cherelle also found herself terrified when Brittney told her that she is trying to hold the “last bit of you” that she can remember.
“I’m really just trying to hold on to the last bit of you that I can remember,”?Brittney apparently told Cherelle when they last spoke. Griner also shared her own thoughts when the news of the appeal getting denied came out. “I understand being in the field of law that every state, every country has their own rules, but this is just absurd,” Cherelle said. “The crime and the punishment is disproportionate at its finest…,” she added.

Attempts to free Brittney Griner so far
Brittney Griner was detained at a Moscow airport on the 17th of February due to her possession of an illegal substance found in her luggage.
In August, President Joe Biden said Griner was “wrongfully detained” by Russia. Since then, US officials have tried to secure Brittney Griner’s freedom through a potential prisoner swap. The deal would involve Griner and Paul Whelan, another American currently incarcerated in Russia, in exchange for Victor Bout, a convicted Russian arms dealer currently in prison in the US.
