Over the years, he grew into a seasoned professional and won six titles with the Chicago Bulls. It was almost a certainty that if you wanted to win in the NBA, you’d have to get past MJ first.

This is why many regard him as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT). However, not everyone shares the same opinion. One such person is former Seattle SuperSonics’ legend, Gary Payton. In a recent interview, he picked Warriors’ legend Wilt Chamberlain as the greatest basketball player and explained his point of view.

Gary Payton on Wilt Chamberlain

In a recent interview with ‘VLAD TV’, Payton explained that Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. To support his view, he explained that all the NBA players are either chasing or breaking Chamberlain’s records.

“You know all the stuff that he (Wilt Chamberlain) did and all the records, who are all chasing after his records? It’s all his records. You know everybody chasing out there and breaking his records,” said Payton.

“I don’t see nobody else chasing after one guy breaking records. I see all Wilt Chamberlain records getting broken. When you see Harden and all of them, who records is he breaking? He’s breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s,” he added.

Thereafter, he mentioned that he doesn’t compare players. He believed that all NBA legends are great, since they are all in the Hall of Fame. Clearly, Payton does not believe in comparison and respects the greatness of every player.

So saying who among the two is greater is a difficult choice to make. Jordan seems to have been a better scorer, but Chamberlain is almost as good but possesses a strong rebounding ability. Although Chamberlain has a whole host of NBA records, Jordan gave a franchise the legacy it holds today. Hence, the only way to identify the best is to match them up against each other. That matchup for sure will be a sight to see.
