In an interview, former NBA star Gary Payton shared many stories about his NBA career, as well as his time with the Miami Heat. He recalled what it was like to win the championship with the team for the first time. In the interview, he mentioned that he was 36, which meant he had already passed his prime years.
In addition, he mentioned he had a different experience in Heat compared to his previous teams. Payton says the “Miami Heat culture” helped the team win the historic NBA Finals led by Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade.
He continued by explaining how he knew it was the right time for him to retire from the basketball court. In the course of the conversation, he opened up that he had no idea what he was going to do when he retired. As he said in the video, after so many years, he returned with new in-person and on-camera abilities.

He talked about how much he has contributed and how important those little victories are to him. As a team, they shared a strong bond, both on and off the court, spending time as a family together.
Payton discusses his 15th season with the Miami Heat and being teammates with Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade
It was Payton’s 15th season in which he helped the Heat achieve their first championship. He had a great performance as the backup point guard with an average of 7.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.

As he mentioned in the interview, everything was different due to the team’s culture and how they behaved with each other. According to him:
“We all hung out together, we all did everything together. We went through so much stuff and that season, Pat Riley comes in, he puts a big old bucket in and we throw all kinds of stuff in there and we make a thing 15 strong. That’s what we made it and when we started doing that, everybody’s wives started hanging out with each other. We started doing everything together.”
