The last 48 hours have schooled a lot of young hoop fans about the legacy of the NBA. It all started with a resurfaced clip of Dennis Rodman disrespecting Larry Bird. Immediately after that, it divided the room between those who hail Bird as one of the all-time greats and those who sided with Rodman’s take. The matter took an interesting turn when veterans of the game decide to jump in.

Of course, a debate about an athlete of the 80s would be incomplete without the opinion of NBA veterans.

So, the former teammate of Michael Jordan manages to spark a debate that caught the internet by storm. And, another Boston Celtics legend now defends the 66-year-old legend.

Celtics legend defends Larry Bird against Michael Jordan’s teammate’s comments

Larry Bird’s legacy in the NBA is set in stone. The 66-year-old played from 1979 to 1992 for the Celtics. During his time in the league, Bird won 3 NBA titles, 2 Finals MVPs, 3 NBA MVPs, and made 12 All-Star appearances. Nicknamed the Hick from French Lick, many consider Bird to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Amidst the many achievements that Bird has under his belt, he also holds a unique record that hasn’t been repeated. Bird is the only player in the league’s history to have won Coach of the Year, Executive of the Year, Rookie of the Year, league MVP, All-Star MVP, and Finals MVP.

Despite all his accolades, the Chicago Bulls star called him “overrated.”

This comment recently faced an outcry from fans, prompting a discussion about Bird’s career as an athlete. The latest to join this conversation is another Celtics legend, Kevin Garnett. KG won an NBA title with the Celtics in 2008 and was the league MVP in 2004.

He recently posted a clip of Bird’s heroics on IG stories, of Bird on the court. Along with the clip, he adds a lengthy caption defending the legend. Garnett wrote, “Pls don’t get FUXXD UP..MF LARRY LEGEND WAS LIKE THAT.”

Dennis Rodman’s reason behind calling Bird overrated

Rodman was and still remains, an embodiment of a wild soul. The Bulls star has always maintained an image where he hardly cares about what anyone thinks of him. Even from the very beginning, Rodman had a flare about him that wasn’t known to many.

So, when he decided to comment on an all-time great, he took the conversation in another direction. Rodman said, “he is white,” as a reason why Bird receives so much praise.
