Brittney Griner is currently on her way to a penal colony. Per the verdict, the WNBA star will serve her nine-year prison span at an isolated location. As the new development came to light, an ex-convict sent a few words of advice to the Phoenix Mercury star. The ex-convict, who was a member of a punk rock band, shed some light on what Griner should expect at her new destination.

After the news of Brittney Griner’s transfer got out, fans began speculating what she might have to go through at the new location. Eventually, a member of P*ssy Riot,?Maria Alyokhina came forth to talk about the conditions of the penal colony she had previously lived in. Alyokhina is a member of a feminist performance group who spent two years in Russian prison along with fellow band member, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova. Alyokhina stated that the penal colony was unlike any ordinary prison. She compared the place to that of the Gulag labor camps, which were vast establishments formed by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

?It actually is a labor camp because by law all the prisoners should work. The quite cynical thing about this work is that prisoners usually sew police uniforms and uniforms for the Russian army, almost without salary,” said Alyokhina.

Maria Alyokhina said that the establishment was like a small village. Brittney Griner would most probably have to live with about 100 women in the same room. Additionally, there were barely any amenities and bathing was a luxury that they could afford only once a week. Furthermore, Alyokhina stated that the inmates had to perform forced labor and compared it to slavery.
