Reigning NBA Champions Golden State Warriors started to really have their best run in the last decade. Ending a long drought, the San Francisco side won their first championship in 40 years in 2015. They repeated the feat in 2017 and 2018 as well. One of the major factors in their continued success has been the culture that they’ve built. While championship teams usually require each and every member of the organization to be locked in, sometimes it can be too much for players. However, that has never been the case for anyone involved with the Warriors.

Their culture is so good that players were willing to give up money just so they could be a part of the franchise. Addressing that appeal, a former star reminisced about his days with the franchise, revealing the amount of money he gave up on.

The brotherhood and the dinners mattered more

In the latest episode of the Draymond Green Show, the 4x-NBA Champion had an uninhibited conversation with his former teammate JaVale McGee. The friends discussed various topics ranging from McGee’s feud with Shaquille O’Neal to his Grammy nomination for a Justin Bieber Album. McGee also revealed that he gave up on earning over $1 million just so he could stay a part of the team.

JaVale McGee joined the San Francisco side in 2016 and the Warriors won the championship that very season. Despite many lucrative offers, the center chose to play for the Warriors in the next season as well. Bringing up the decision, Dray asked his former teammate as to why he chose to stay. The former star replied, “Tasting that Championship man, seeing what it took from game one to game 82 to every game in the playoff…”

McGee listed some more of his reasons for giving up money.

The Brotherhood that I felt.. the energy.. the way the Warriors organization treats their players. I had been to three four teams and the Warriors by far still to this day treat their players the best out of anybody. Just one aspect of how the Warriors does it… the dinners on the road… I still haven’t seen that, I have been on four teams after that. Just the aspect of it, being able to congregate with your teammates and their family, order whatever you want.. you can just congregate and the fellowship. That was one aspect and I’m like I got to do it again, a million more ain’t gonna do it for me,” said McGee as Dray surely felt proud.
