Jersey number 23 is the face of basketball uniforms. Almost every basketball player knows who wore number 23. Michael Jordan was the first player to popularize the number. Every NBA fan around that time always wanted a jersey numbered 23. The number was then worn by LeBron James, who made the number even more iconic.

But the story behind Jordan’s jersey number is quite interesting. Jordan first wore 23 in high school. The days that followed had Michael were the same number for the rest of his career, until one day when he had to wear the number 12.

Richard Nixon, who served as the president of the US from 1969 to 1974, used to play football in his early days. An old picture reveals him wearing jersey number 23. Only if it could’ve been the reason Jordan wore 23. Michael’s brother Larry wore 45 in high school. To relate to the number, Michael halved 45 and rounded it off to 23.

Jordan wore 23 for most of his career until one day his jersey went missing before the game tipped off. Michael did not have a choice but to start, wearing number 12. Though the jersey he wore did not have his name on the back, which made it look quite unprofessional. Nonetheless, Jordan dropped 49 wearing a nameless jersey.

Michael Jordan started the trend of number 3

Almost every great player has 3 as a digit in their jersey number. LeBron and MJ wear 23, Curry wears 30, Chris Paul is known for wearing the number 3, James Harden wears 13 and KD wore 35 in his prime. The strange relation of the number 3 is unknown, but it seems if someone wants to make a name for themselves, they can start off by wearing a number that includes 3 in it.
