The demise of 29-year-old Memphis resident, Tyre Nichols has provoked wide-spread outrage. Nichols passed away on January 10th, three days after a traffic stop by the Memphis Police Department officers. The five officers were fired and later charged with second-degree murder on January 26th. NBA stars such as LeBron James and Chris Paul have spoken up about the incident. Ex-All-Star and former Memphis Grizzlies guard Mike Conley also offered his condolences to the deceased’s family.

LeBron took to Twitter to share his reaction to the video, saying, “WE ARE OUR OWN WORSE ENEMY!!!” On the other hand, Paul shared his disappointment and showed compassion for Nichols’ family. He wrote on Twitter, “Change is needed at all levels and we all need to do our part. We can’t lose our humanity as a society. To the Nichols’ family and Memphis community, my heart is with you tonight.”

Meanwhile, Conley who was a part of the city of Memphis for 12 years, also shared his sympathies on Twitter. He asked for justice for Tyre Nichols.

The National Basketball Players’ Association (NBPA) also issued a statement after Nichols’ death. “We will continue to monitor the investigation and legal proceedings in search of justice for Tyre and his family.”

Isiah Thomas, Reggie Bullock, Robert Griffin III, and many other sports stars also offered condolences to the family of Tyre Nichols.

What led to Tyre Nichols’ demise?

As per the timeline of events presented by The New York Times, Nichols was pulled over on suspicion of reckless driving on Jan. 7th by the Memphis Police Department. According to the police’s initial statement, an altercation occurred which led to Nichols fleeing the scene. Eventually, an ambulance was called after Nichols complained of shortness of breath.

He eventually succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Jan. 10th. A memorial service was held in Tyre’s honor a few days later. This led to an internal investigation by the Memphis Police Department. On Jan. 20th the five police officers connected to the case were all fired.

A preliminary autopsy report showed that Nichols “suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating.” On Jan. 26th, the five fired officers were charged with second-degree murder and were consequently arrested.
