The perennial argument over who is the greatest player of all time is one that we are all familiar with. LeBron James made a strong case for himself in this debate when he surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and broke the all-time scoring record a couple of months ago. However, analysts and players alike have varying opinions when it comes to weighing in on the subject. Recently, an ex-NBA All-Star player brought up Ja Morant’s name to support his point in the GOAT debate.

Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas has shared his opinion on the success of Michael Jordan and LeBron James in different eras of the league. Arenas also suggests that James would have thrived in the older era of basketball, where his size and skill set would have been unmatched.

How would social media affect MJ’s legacy in today’s era?

Gilbert Arenas recently weighed in on the never-ending debate about the greatest players in NBA history during an appearance on the I Am Athlete podcast. He argued that if we switched Michael Jordan and LeBron James in different eras, MJ’s personality and extracurricular activities such as gambling would not pass in the current age of social media.

He even mentioned Ja Morant because of his recent gun incident, calling it “silly s**t” that is tarnishing his legacy, and questioned whether MJ could have survived in the current era under such scrutiny.

While one of the hosts of the podcast argued that the criteria should solely be how players play on the field, Arenas said, “This is pure fact, right? If we take MJ, Michael Jordan, and we switch them in eras, boom. Michael Jordan’s personality, the way he lived his life, he will not be perfect like LeBron when you’re talking about your whole package. When we’re talking about Ja Morant and the silly s**t he’s doing and that’s tarnishing his legacy, you take MJ’s personality, the gambling, and all that and put it in this scrutiny? Fu** no!”

Gilbert Arenas argues for LeBron James’ unique style of play

Arenas also suggests that fans have not truly seen LeBron James for the player he is because they are too busy comparing him to other players, specifically Michael Jordan.  Arenas acknowledges that LeBron James’ style of play is more comparable to Magic Johnson’s than Michael Jordan’s. He believes that James’ ability to create for his teammates should be admired, rather than constantly comparing him to Jordan.

However, Arenas also recognizes that James is capable of taking over a game like Jordan did in the Finals when his teammates were injured. Overall, Arenas’ opinion of James is that he should be appreciated for the player he is, rather than constantly compared to other legends.
