Ja Morant, the Memphis Grizzlies centerpiece, has been plagued with controversies. The 23-year-old point guard has faced severe criticism after displaying a firearm on two occasions. Since then, Morant has been suspended from all team activities by Memphis, pending an investigation that will determine the full extent of his punishment. The controversies had a detrimental impact on Morant, subjecting him to fan scrutiny and resulting in the loss of a $39 million bonus.

The sequence of events commenced with Ja Morant’s Instagram live stream at a Denver nightclub, where the 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year was observed brandishing a firearm. Following this incident, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver engaged in a conversation with Morant and subsequently suspended him for consecutive eight games in the regular season. Morant was, however, once again captured flashing a handgun. As a consequence, Morant has been suspended from all activities of the Memphis Grizzlies.
Morant later faced accusations of punching a teenager several times during a casual basketball game at his residence. He then went inside his house and came back with a gun. His behavior off the court has had a negative impact on his performance on the court. As per his contract, if Morant was able to have a selection for any of the All-NBA teams, he would have a $39 million bonus. Despite averaging impressive statistics of 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists, his misconduct off the court prevented him from earning the prestigious All-NBA recognition.
In a recent development, Ja Morant has chosen to unfollow his longtime friend Devonte Pack also known as DTap. Morant and DTap were teammates on the same AAU team. They were together during both incidents where Morant displayed a gun. Furthermore, DTap was involved in a heated altercation with players from the Indiana Pacers during a Grizzlies game, resulting in his removal from the arena and a one-year ban from attending Memphis home games.
