During an interview with Graham Bensinger, LeBron James‘ former teammate, and brother-figure, Kevin Love, opened up about various aspects of his life, including his accomplishments, mental health, and deep admiration for Shaquille O’Neal while growing up. Love revealed that as a child, he had a profound love for basketball, desiring NBA videos instead of toys. Kevin, a member of the Shaq fan club, eagerly awaited mail with letters, merchandise, and VHS tapes, later realizing they weren’t from Shaq.
He said, “I always wanted Shaq basketballs, I was part of the Shaq fan club.”
However, Love’s first encounter with Shaq in person left a memorable impact on him. Thanks to his father’s media pass, they had access to the locker room where Love’s father coincidentally encountered Shaq in the elevator. Love’s father revealed that his son was a dedicated fan, and Shaq kindly took the time to meet young Kevin and his family. This experience influenced the 2016 NBA champion’s approach to treating fans with kindness and respect. Despite any criticisms Love may face on TNT for his three-point shooting, he will always appreciate Shaq for the meaningful moment they shared.
The Heat player admired Shaq growing up but didn’t get to play with him as Shaq was nearing retirement. However, upon joining the Cavs, Kevin Love grasped the opportunity to play alongside some of the best in the league.
LeBron James and Kevin Love are more than brothers to each other
The former Cleveland Cavaliers forward earned his stripes with his dedication and commitment to the game and his teammates. Now an NBA veteran, he joined the Cavs with only 6 seasons in the league, instantly clicking with LeBron James and the team.
James has always been close with the 5x NBA All-star. Ever since he left Miami and joined the Cavs back on a 4-year deal in 2014, NBA fans witnessed one of the best performances from a team with three all-star players in James, Kyrie, and Love. Due to a season-ending injury sustained against the Boston Celtics in the playoffs, Love was unable to play in the 2015 Finals. However, he was crucial throughout the season for his contribution to helping the team reach the finals.
In a matchup between the Lakers and Cavaliers last year, James showcased his dominance in Cleveland yet again. With a spectacular triple-double performance, James led the Lakers to a commanding victory over the Cavaliers. LeBron’s posterizing dunk on Love showcased his athleticism and left fans in awe of his skills.
Despite the embarrassing moment, there was no animosity between Love and the Los Angeles Lakers forward. In a playful gesture, Love jokingly put LeBron in a chokehold and pretended to slam him to the ground. LeBron, showing his strong bond with Love, expressed his reluctance about dunking on his friend, stating, “I hate that it had to be him. That’s my guy. That’s my brother.” The exchange showcased mutual respect and camaraderie, demonstrating that their relationship remained strong despite the on-court incident.
