The Detroit Pistons? exploits from the late 80s to the early 90s are etched into the fabric of NBA lore. Back then, the ‘Bad Boy Pistons’ consistently outsmarted Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, who were desperately chasing a maiden title. After once again defeating the Bulls in the 1989 Conference Finals, Detroit would go into the Finals and give the Showtime Lakers a serious beating. 34 years after the glorious run, Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman has now recalled the historic moments from ’89.

While locking horns with the Showtime Lakers, Dennis Rodman had to hold his ground and protect the basket for Detroit. Simultaneously, Rodman was facing an equally tough and troublesome time off the court.

The Eastern Conference dominated the NBA throughout the 1980s and 90s. Detroit and Chicago alone won a combined eight titles in 10 seasons. But in the early and mid-80s, the Los Angeles Lakers made back-to-back Finals appearances and won five championships in spectacular fashion. Earning the name ‘Showtime Lakers,’ Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, among others, faced Detroit in 1989, with their sights firmly set on a sixth ring. However, the Bad Boy Pistons had different ideas.

In his recent appearance on VladTV, Dennis Rodman recalled the time he and the Pistons humiliated LA. The interviewer brought up Rodman’s 1989 season with Detroit, when he won, both, the DPOY award and the NBA championship. “You guys played the Lakers again in the NBA Finals and you swept them 4-0,”?the host told Rodman.

“Yes we swept them, we swept them in that time,” said Rodman. Then opened up about some tumultuous personal events during that time. “My ex-wife was trying to take me to court and take my daughter. I was thinking about that too much. But the team came together man and everybody rallied,” Rodman added.

Dealing with such a difficult off-court situation, Rodman must have struggled to get his focus on. Thankfully, with his teammates in his corner, he was able to thrive on the court and help the Pistons secure their first-ever championship. What’s more, the following season was a historic repeat as Rodman and Detroit won their second ring in a row.

Dennis Rodman’s troublesome personal life did not do much to affect his game in the league. After sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers, Rodman won another DPOY award the next season. Repeating the 1989 campaign, the Pistons would sweep the Bulls in 1990 before defeating the Portland Trail Blazers to secure their second consecutive ring.

Even then, Rodman had to battle certain issues. Then, trouble came in the form of a calf injury. However, just like off-the-court troubles, the injury did not have a significant effect on the resilient Rodman.
