Draymond Green and Kevin Durant were teammates during a period when the Golden State Warriors were at their peak. Not that they are in a bad state now, because they just won their 4th NBA title in eight seasons. But the Warriors from 2016 to 19 were a different beast altogether. They won two successive titles and could have won a third if the Warriors didn’t suffer from injuries.

Green was the defensive leader of the team, while Kevin Durant was the “gun” that did not miss. If you have Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson alongside too, then that would be considered a super team.

Durant left the Warriors for the Brooklyn Nets in 2019. He hasn’t been able to replicate his success there. It culminated in him and his team being dumped out in the first round of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics. Subsequently, he has asked for a trade.

He has been criticized a lot since joining the Golden State Warriors in 2016. His decision to leave the Nets builds up the perception that there is no fight in him. The teams he has been linked to also point in that direction. But Draymond Green disagrees. He calls it a business move.

Draymond pontificates on people criticizing this trade request

Durant’s former teammate talked about KD’s decision. Green asked everyone to look at it as a business move and just view it as that. He said, “Let’s talk about the move that’s made. Is that a good move for business or not? But to start calling somebody weak and they run from challenges. That’s baffling to me because that man has worked his entire life to be in that position to where he controls where he goes next. By the way, everyone in the NBA can’t control where they go next.”

“So, to be in that position, and have that opportunity to control what you do next. That’s the ‘American Dream.'”

He also mentioned that athletes like Kevin Durant are killed for it and that the critics have not adjusted to the fact that athletes are big businessmen as well. Draymond concluded that people have to make that adjustment so that they don’t throw out such terrible narratives. He cited examples of Nikola Jokic, Ja Morant, and Devin Booker’s contract extensions as players starting to be big businessmen in their contract talks.

Where does Kevin Durant go?

Durant is now in the “driver’s seat” and can go wherever he pleases. Experts like Zach Lowe have said as much. Without the express permission of Kevin Durant, no team would like to offer great assets to the Nets. The question is where will Durant go in the end? It all depends on the player’s intentions and what he wants to achieve.
