The news around Brittney Griner has been anything but quiet. Recently, her appeal was denied by a Russian court. Which means she will soon serve in a Russian penal colony. According to reports, the penal colonies are some of the most gruesome facilities for convicts. And the experience of a former US Marine falls just in line.

The penal colonies in Russia are an extension similar to that of the Soviet gulag. The conditions in the facility seem to be intense and grim. With heavy labor hours and poor hygiene conditions, Griner’s statement is considered being harsh. Moreover, some past convicts have shared their stories about the horrid treatment in the colonies.

A former US Marine, Trevor Reed, was also sentenced to the penal colony in Russia. And his experience might send goosebumps down the spine of the sporting community in such concerning times for Brittney Griner.

What can Brittney Griner expect in her nine-year sentence?

They found Reed to be guilty of assaulting two police officers in Moscow in 2019. Similar to Griner, his sentence was also extended to nine years in a Russian penal colony. The arrest was controversial, and his parents fought every step of the way. For three years, Reed battled the hard conditions of the penal colony. In April, his release came to life with a prisoner swap. However, he detailed some of the gruesome conditions he had to face while held captive.

His experience shed truth on the unhygienic treatment of the penal colonies. Notably, Reed even went on a hunger strike to oppose the treatment. Some of it included him getting substandard quality food. Notably, the food Reed got was “Spoiled meat that the prison cats wouldn?t even eat.?

This isn’t the first instance of bad treatment in the Russian penal colony. Notably, in 2013, Tolokonnikova provided an insight into the camp. Just like Reed, she, too, went on a hunger strike for the condition she went through. However, she admitted that her celebrity status allowed her to be spared from the harsh treatment. For her fellow inmates, they had to go through a long 17-hour word day in rough conditions.
