Any news surrounding Brittney Griner of late has been terrifying for her supporters. The WNBA superstar has spent nearly a year in Russia after being arrested on drug possession charges earlier this year in February. Her nine-year sentencing sent shockwaves through the entire sporting community. A few days back, the Phoenix Mercury center was transported to a penal colony to serve her sentence. And an ex-inmate’s prior experience is sure to send chills down her supporters’ spines.

After a failed appeal, news hit about Griner’s transfer to a penal colony. These facilities hold a grim reputation. Often characterized by a harsh environment and intense physical labor, times are bound to get challenging for the 32-year-old. The WNBA star’s location was unknown until Reuters reported that she will be staying at the all-female penal colony IK-2 in Yavas.

A former inmate in Yavas, Irina Noskova shared some disturbing details of the colony where Griner is set to live in.

The Yevas penal colony is rather unknown among the masses. It has the reputation of allegedly being gruesome with subpar hygienic conditions for the inmates. ?However, it seems that is only the tip of the iceberg. Noskova was a former inmate at IK-12 and said claimed saw some horrifying things during her time there.

She alleged that violence is a common theme at Yavas. With inmates made to do intense physical labor, she claimed they would get beat up if they don’t fast enough.

Such an update is the last thing Brittney Griner fans would have wanted. Efforts by US officials to secure Griner’s freedom seem to have failed so far. With hopes of a potential prisoner swap seemingly likely as Griner’s only hope at the moment. Recent reports suggest Russia may be willing to accept such an offer.

A proposed prisoner swap that included Brittney Griner and another American currently incarcerated in Russia, Paul Whelan, could be the key to their freedom. The deal would include convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who is currently in prison in the US. Griner and her supporters will undoubtedly hope such a deal can be reached between the two superpowers.
