The U.S. government has been taking steps to bring WNBA star Brittney Griner back home from Russia. She has been detained in Russia for more than seven months now for the possession of cannabis oil. The Phoenix Mercury star pleaded guilty. She was then given a nine-year sentence by a Russian judge after a few hearings. However, the U.S. has characterized her as “wrongfully detained.” Despite multiple efforts from the government, there has been no success so far.

Ever since her arrest, there were suggestions that a Russian weapons dealer could be used in a prisoner swap to bring her back. But not everyone is a fan of this idea. Giving away a criminal who could try to hurt the country again just because she was a popular figure did not sit well with many fans. However, most celebrities did not have the same opinion.

Most celebrities voiced their support for Griner. And demanded she should be brought back whatever the price is. Furthermore, many fans felt the government was being a hypocrite for trying to free Griner, and on the other hand having so many in U.S. jails for cannabis.
Elon Musk gives his approval to the U.S. government’s announcement amid the Brittney Griner situation
Recently, the founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk took to Twitter to ask some hard-hitting questions. He shared a meme talking about the people in jail for cannabis in the country. And the country’s attempts to free Brittney Griner who had allegedly committed a similar offense. This garnered a lot of likes and comments. Interestingly, it looks like it also captured the attention of President Joe Biden and the government.

Biden was under pressure to make a statement after a public callout by someone as popular as Elon Musk. So the President’s official Twitter account shared his statement. It read, “As I?ve said before, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana. Today, I?m taking steps to end our failed approach. Allow me to lay them out.”

The richest person in the world stated he knew he would get into trouble if he shares his opinion about the U.S. government and Griner. However, he proceeded with it as he felt he should be open about his view. But as he expected, he received a lot of backlash from fans on Twitter.
