The Curry family was born to shoot the ball. Dell Curry could shoot the lights out and he came at a time when the long-range shooting game wasn’t preferred all that much. He thrived as an off-the-bench player for the Charlotte Hornets and built a solid NBA career. While Stephen Curry’s stature had long overtaken him, it’s clear that the fundamentals of shooting and the exposure to the game were due to his father’s influence.

Now, another member of the Curry family has taken a tremendous step.

The Dallas Mavericks utilized their biannual exception to sign Seth Curry for a price of $4 million. Curry last played for Brooklyn Nets and his scoring average dipped below double-figures for the first time in five seasons. His left ankle injury was a reason for the dip.

His breakout season came with the Mavericks when he averaged almost 13 points per game. Mark Cuban’s $3.3 billion franchise is now giving a third chance to the Shooting Guard.

He can give great deep shooting alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. While his impact may not be like what it was with the 76ers when he averaged 15 a game, he still magnetizes defense. Injuries have bothered him a lot, so it will be intriguing to see how it turns out.

There were murmurs of him joining his brother Steph in the Warriors, but things have taken a different route. His father had called Seth getting to the Dub City a “longshot” but also said, “anything is possible.”

This might be heartbreaking news for both Steph and Dell, who would have wanted him to go to Golden State Warriors. Another peculiar aspect is that Seth’s statistics and role are much like his father’s. He used to be a bench player just like his son, and his job was to knock down open jumpers.

His dad played in a much more inside scoring and mid-range era while the current Mavericks Guard has the luxury to play in a spread-out league with the license to shoot. Dad Curry used to take both Curry brothers to practice with him when he played in the NBA.

The potential role for Seth moving forward

The challenge of injuries has cut-shot Seth’s journey by half. If not for injuries, he could have gotten close to the 20 points per game. At any rate, he had a more than decent NBA career, getting close to around 15 a game repeatedly.

With the Mavs, he can become a prime threat off the bench. Irving and Doncic will occupy the defense and when paired with either, Curry is going to get a lot of open shots.
