Kyrie Irving is one of the most talented point guards in the NBA. However, the seven-time All-Star has had a perilous journey as he jumped ships a number of times, limiting his opportunity to achieve more than he has. The Cleveland Cavaliers chose Irving as the first overall pick during the 2011 NBA drafts. However, the 2012 Rookie of the Year infamously left the Cavs and split with LeBron James after winning the championship in 2016. Recently, Kyrie Irving has finally given an opinion on his decision to leave LeBron’s side and join the Boston Celtics in 2017.

Irving discussed his controversial decision during the early stage of his career during an interview with NBA Insider Shams Charania. Kyrie Irving also talked about the surprising trade request that his Brooklyn Nets teammate Kevin Durant made during the offseason, which shook the whole franchise.

Looking back on his journey, Irving admitted that he did not understand the NBA business and industry well enough. Moreover, his lack of understanding might have led to some unprofitable decisions. Kyrie Irving stated that his decision to be traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017 exhausted his opportunity to get close to the guys when he felt some kind of difference.

The Brooklyn Nets guard blamed his lack of understanding of the league for requesting to be traded from the Cavs. Irving said, “Asking for a trade, I don’t think it was my time to ask for a trade.”

However, the Nets star pointed out that his journey finally helped him understand the situation around the court. He became a better person in terms of maintaining relationships. Irving continued, “I understand the way that roles work. And if anybody, you know can say, can honestly say like they messed up, it was me.”
