WNBA star Brittney Griner is stuck in Russia for over eight months now. She was detained in February at a Moscow Airport for possessing cannabis oil in her belongings. Subsequently, a Russian court sentenced her to nine years in prison for drug trafficking charges following a guilty plea. As BG awaits an appeal hearing scheduled for October 25, the NBA world has come in support of the Phoenix Mercury center. Stephen Curry and several others have spoken out in favor of Griner’s release during the opening stages of the NBA 2022-23 season.?

Recently, former basketball veteran and sportscaster, Dan Dakich, slammed Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry for claiming that Brittney Griner is ‘unlawfully detained’ in Russia during his ring-celebration ceremony speech.

The NBA kicked off a new season on the occasion of Brittney Griner‘s 32nd birthday. During his speech ahead of the game, four-time NBA champ Curry stated on behalf of the NBA that they wanted to continue to use the platform to keep talking about Griner’s safe return. Curry said,?“We want to continue to let her name be known and it’s been 243 days since she’s been wrongfully incarcerated in Russia.”?

Dakich criticizes Stephen Curry’s claims about Brittney Griner

Dan Dakich disagreed with Stephen Curry. In fact, he criticized him for claiming that BG had been wrongfully detained. Dakich claimed that he had been advocating for Griner’s return for over two months on his platform. However, he pointed out that there has been a lot of chatter from the NBA world. including Stephen Curry, that Brittney Griner had been wrongfully incarcerated in Russia. Dakich said, “Don’t tell me she’s unlawfully detained when that’s the laws of Russia!”

The basketball sportscaster suggested that different countries and states have different laws. He criticized the claims made by people that Griner was unlawfully detained and deemed them as spewing nonsense. Dakich reiterated the fact that bringing weed into Russia is a punishable offense as per the laws there. Further, he clarified that he still believes Brittney Griner should have been out of Russia a long time ago.

Meanwhile, the term “unlawfully detained” was used in Brittney Griner’s case in official statements by American authorities. Since then, the term has been used quite often by experts, fans, and players. However, Dakich felt that it was wrong to consider Griner unlawfully detained. She did make a mistake that was against the law as per Dakich. Now, BG’s fate rests in the appeal hearing that will define her future in Russia.
